Welcome to Cairns City Lions

Cairns City Lions, a club on the way up!Nestled amongst picturesque scenery only a couple of streets from the beautiful Holloways Beach, 15 minutes to the north of Cairns, is the "Lion's Den"......home to the Cairns City Lions AFL Club.

Coupled with the Holloways Beach Sporting Club, Cairns City Lions offers that country club atmosphere, yet the passion and rich history that attract people from all over.

The club was born in 1969 as a breakaway group from North Cairns. The club was known as City United and played in reserve grade in Navy Blue and White colours. In 1971 City United won the Reserves premiership and was elevated to senior status in 1973. Playing out of Australian Football Park (AFP), now known as Cazaly's, City United were runners up in 1975,'76 and '79 and went on to win the 1982 and 1983 Senior premierships.

In 1990, City United underwent a name change to become Cairns City's Cobras with 1992 and 1994 being senior runners up. In 1996, Holloways Beach Sporting Complex came to fruition and Cairns City's Cobras moved to their new home. Redlynch Junior AFL Club was born in 1996 in the rapidly growing suburb of Redlynch. In 2004, the club won its first junior premiership in the U18 division made up of the very boys that played in the U8s nine years earlier. Further premierships in 2005(u12, u18), 2009(u12) and 2011(u14, u18) have seen a very strong junior club emerge with up to 140 currently registered players.

In 2011, with Cairns City's Cobras in need of juniors and Redlynch Lions Juniors in need of a senior club, the two merged to form the Cairns City Lions. The club plays in a maroon, navy blue and gold strip which identifies with both clubs.

CAIRNS CITY LIONS is now a club that encompasses an area from Holloways Beach to Stratford, Brinsmead to Redlynch and Smithfield to Machans Beach. Our juniors are very strong and we pride ourselves on our "youth policy" when it comes to the senior side.

With coaches at all levels with great credentials the future and success of our club is guaranteed!

We boast a successful record of VFL/AFL players such as Robert and Rodney Cockatoo (Nth Melbourne), Jason Roe (Collingwood, Brisbane), Mark West (Footscray, Brisbane Bears), Che Cockatoo-Collins (Essendon, Port Adelaide), David and Donald Cockatoo-Collins (Melbourne), Nathanial Bown (Geelong) Charlie Dixon (Gold Coast), Rex Liddy (Gold Coast), Peter Yagmoor (Collingwood).

Highlights include Round 8 which will see Cairns City Lions' Dreamtime by the Sea Match against North Cairns to be played at Holloways Beach Sporting Complex to align with the AFL's Indigenous Round on Saturday, 28th May 2016. This day embraces the wider community and features traditional indigenous cultural activities, including Welcome to Country and indigenous music and dance. It has been a brilliant spectacle in years gone past.

Another highlight day for the calendar is when The Lions play the Hawks on Mother's Day in Round 5 (Sunday 8th May). A great opportunity to treat that Special Lady and watch a game of football as an added bonus. With a modern Sporting and Social Club, and a multi-use sporting field located in the most picturesque setting, the Lions offer a special ambience for you to support your team, enjoy a fantastic day of family entertainment, or just be part of the social club scene. So, come down and check us out. Whether you are local to the Cairns area or from anywhere in Australia, you can be sure you'll meet someone from your region.
