Our Past – Club History

The club was born in 1969 as a breakaway group from North Cairns. The club was known as City United and played in reserve grade in navy blue and white colours. In 1971, City United won the Reserves premiership and was elevated to senior status in 1973. Playing out of Australian Football Park (AFP), now known as Cazaly’s, City United were runners up in 1975, 1976 and 1979 and went on to win the 1982 and 1983 Senior premierships.

In 1990, City United underwent a name change to become Cairns City’s Cobras with 1992 and 1994 being senior runners up. In 1996, Holloways Beach Sporting Complex came to fruition and Cairns City’s Cobras moved to their new home.

That same year, the Redlynch Junior AFL Club was born in the rapidly growing suburb of Redlynch. In 2004, the club won its first junior premiership in the U18 division, made up of the very boys that played in the U8s nine years earlier. Further premierships in 2005 (u12, u18), 2009 (u12) and 2011 (u14, u18) have seen a very strong junior club emerge with up to 140 currently registered players.

In 2011, with Cairns City’s Cobras in need of juniors and Redlynch Lions Juniors in need of a senior club, the two merged to form the Cairns City Lions. The club plays in a maroon, navy blue and gold strip which identifies with both clubs.
